The Jolly's
The Jolly's are an acclaimed traditional Irish music and folk band originally from Odesa, Ukraine. Formed over a decade ago, the trio plays a mix of upbeat drinking songs and Celtic instrumentals using the fiddle, bodhrán, and guitar.
When the war broke out in 2022 The Jolly's made the decision to leave Ukraine. While they had played in Europe before, they had never managed to get to Ireland. Starting their lives from scratch, they set Dublin as the goal and made their way across Europe, busking their way from town to town, replacing cars, and raising funds all the way.
In order to support them, a fundraiser was organised with the Dublin Shakespeare Society, in which The Jolly's would livestream into the Teacher's Club on Parnell Square, and play a back and forth set with Carraigín (led by Marion McEvoy).
Newtown Audio was brought on to facilitate this using a number of techniques we were able to give Irish audiences their first taste of the The Jolly's, and show The Jolly's the support that was waiting for them when they arrived.

Brief
There was a full house assembled to hear The Jolly's play live from Odesa. We needed to manage the switch between the live stream and Carraigín in Dublin. There were to be 4 sets between the two bands.
Challenge
While there was internet coverage in the venue, the Ukranian connectivity was slow and unstable, and could not support the broadcast at suitable quality.
Solution
We worked with The Jolly's to pre-record their sets, and then played the performance through the house PA and projected for the audience, while streaming the audience back to Ukraine.
How we helped
As far as the audience knew, they were watching a live concert. Two bands playing sets back to back, and able to respond to a live audience. The success of the night successfully raised funds to help The Jolly's journey to Ireland.
